Transitioning between industries or careers can be a source of tremendous stress for anyone. When taking up a career in acting, though, the stress can increase tenfold. Clients are bound to doubt and second-guess their decision, and you may have to assuage their fears. Here are some ways to help your clients transition into the world of acting.
It’s Never Too Late
Clients may come in with no prior acting experience—not even an elementary school play. Others may feel that they’re past their prime and have reached some ill-defined “too old” threshold. No matter the case, emphasize that there’s no age limit to acting and help them understand that it’s never too late to learn. Offer examples of actors whose career starts and successes didn’t come until later in life. These case studies will alleviate fears and comfort clients.
Utilize Any Prior Skills
Encourage clients to employ skills from previous jobs both on- and off-screen. A client who previously worked in manual labor likely has the physique for tough-guy roles, and perhaps some capability to handle their own stunts. A client with a digital marketing or tech background could use their knowledge to brand themselves online, making them more appealing to casting directors. No matter what industry your client is phasing out of, there are bound to be talents that carry over into the world of acting.
Provide a Listening Ear
Clients trust you to be an expert in the world of acting, and this may manifest in a variety of ways. If a client needs to verbalize some of their fears and concerns, let them. You have the expertise to understand what they’re worried about and whether their fears are warranted. Offer insight, even if a client doesn’t ask for it, and ensure your client understands the rewards of being an actor, not just the risks.
Remind Clients Why They Changed Careers
Perhaps a long-dead dream was awakened. Perhaps the rat races were too much to bear. Whatever the case, clients who switch careers do so with a reason. When clients feel disheartened or uncertain, remind them of the reason they changed career paths. Often, when a client second-guesses their decisions, they want reassurance. Be the one to provide that reassurance and you’ll have a happier, more successful client.
